In April 2019, the Royal Commission into Violence, Abuse, Neglect and Exploitation of People with Disability was established. After 4 years, the Royal Commission has held 33 public hearings and is drawing to a close. Among the many issues covered by the Royal Commission, the barriers experienced by people with disability in seeking and retaining employment has been a key issue. This presentation will provide an update on the Royal Commission’s work and the key themes relevant to employment.

Kate Eastman AM SC is Counsel Assisting the Royal Commission into Violence, Abuse, Neglect and Exploitation of People with Disability. Kate has over 30 years’ experience working as a lawyer in the fields in human rights, discrimination, employment and public law. She also has taught human rights and international law at a number of Australia universities and internationally. In 2019, she was awarded the Australian Human Rights Commission’s Human Rights Award, Law Award. In 2021, she was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia for significant service to the law, to human rights, and to professional organisations. In 2022 she was awarded the Law Council of Australia’s President’s Award for her significant contribution to the legal profession.
